Bangkok, Thailand, December 1, 2020 –\u00a0Ericsson\u00a0(NASDAQ: ERIC)\u00a0projects\u00a0that four out of every ten mobile subscriptions in 2026 will be 5G.\u00a0This\u00a0forecast\u00a0is included\u00a0in the\u00a0latest edition of the\u00a0Ericsson\u00a0Mobility Report. Current\u00a05G\u00a0uptake in subscriptions and population coverage\u00a0confirms\u00a0the technology as\u00a0deploying\u00a0the fastest\u00a0of any generation of mobile connectivity.\u00a0The report\u00a0estimates\u00a0that by the end of 2020,\u00a0more than\u00a01 billion people \u2013 15 percent of the world\u2019s population \u2013\u00a0will\u00a0live in\u00a0an\u00a0area\u00a0that has\u00a05G coverage rolled\u00a0out.\u00a0220\u00a0million\u00a0global 5G subscriptions are\u00a0also\u00a0expected\u00a0by the end of this year.<\/p>\n

In 2026,\u00a060 percent of the world\u2019s population\u00a0will have access to 5G coverage,\u00a0with\u00a05G subscriptions forecast to reach 3.5 billion,\u00a0estimated to account for more than 50 percent of mobile data traffic at that time.\u00a0In South East Asia and Oceania,\u00a05G is predicted to be the second most popular technology in\u00a02026, only behind LTE, surpassing 380 million subscriptions and\u00a0accounting for 32 percent of\u00a0all mobile subscriptions.<\/p>\n

Nadine Allen, Head of Ericsson Thailand, says: \u201c5G will enhance existing digital services and use cases like video streaming, sports streaming, mobile gaming and smart home services. Augmented Reality (AR) alone is likely to drive more than half of all overall immersive media revenues for service providers compared with other services like cloud gaming,VR content and in-venue digital services. AR gaming is likely to be the main initial driver for AR. Other application areas for AR, such as TV and video viewing, home planning and school and educational usage, will follow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing the first nation in Southeast Asia to roll out 5G, people in Thailand have already started to experience some of the key benefits of 5G for consumers. Meanwhile, Ericsson Thailand is working closely with the Royal Thai Government as well as the ecosystem\u00a0players in Thailand\u00a0to support the country\u2019s digital transformation, which mainly involves Industry 4.0 and 5G for enterprises.\u00a0The success of 5G in the consumer market will be crucial for service providers, underpinning the network expansion to enable them to also target new use cases for industries and enterprises.\u201d<\/p>\n

In South East Asia and Oceania,\u00a0total mobile data traffic continues to grow steadily with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33 percent for the forecast period. It is expected to reach 32EB per month in 2026, equivalent to 33GB per month per smartphone. Growth in mobile data consumption\u00a0has translated into\u00a0more diversified and generous data plans from mobile operators across different geographies.<\/p>\n

The second half of this year has\u00a0also\u00a0seen\u00a0a number of\u00a0commercial 5G launches in South East Asia and Oceania with live networks now in Australia, New Zealand and Thailand. Upcoming spectrum auctions planned for 2021 in countries like Vietnam and Malaysia will bring additional 5G deployments next year.<\/p>\n

The Ericsson Mobility report highlights why 5G success will not be limited to coverage or subscription numbers alone. Its value will also be determined by new use cases and\u00a0applications, the first of which have already started to emerge.\u00a0Critical IoT,\u00a0intended for time-critical applications that demand data delivery within a specified time duration, will be introduced in 5G networks. This will enable a wide range of time-critical services\u00a0for consumers, enterprises and public institutions across various sectors, with 5G public and dedicated networks.<\/p>\n

Cloud gaming is another emerging application category. The combined capabilities provided by 5G networks and edge compute technologies will enable game streaming services on smartphones to compete with a quality of experience (QoE) that is on par with PC or console counterparts,\u00a0opening up\u00a0for innovative, immersive games based on mobility.<\/p>\n

According\u00a0to the new\u00a0Harnessing\u00a0the 5G\u00a0Consumer\u00a0Potential\u00a0report\u00a0from Ericsson\u00a0ConsumerLab,\u00a0the\u00a05G\u00a0consumer\u00a0market\u00a0could\u00a0be\u00a0worth\u00a0USD 31 trillion by 2030\u00a0globally,\u00a0with\u00a0communications\u00a0service\u00a0providers\u00a0(CSPs)\u00a0earning\u00a0USD 3.7 trillion\u00a0of\u00a0that\u00a0total \u2013 a\u00a0figure\u00a0that\u00a0could\u00a0increase\u00a0further\u00a0as new\u00a0adjacent\u00a0digital services\u00a0opportunities\u00a0arise.<\/p>\n

In South\u00a0East\u00a0Asia,\u00a0Oceania\u00a0and India\u00a0the\u00a0report\u00a0estimates\u00a0that\u00a0CSPs\u00a0could\u00a0earn\u00a0USD 297\u00a0bn\u00a0in 5G-enabled\u00a0consumer\u00a0revenues\u00a0by 2030. 79%\u00a0of\u00a0the total service\u00a0provider\u00a05G digital services\u00a0revenue\u00a0,\u00a0estimated\u00a0at 7.5B USD by 2030,\u00a0\u00a0will\u00a0be driven by\u00a0enhanced\u00a0video and\u00a0HiFi\u00a0music. 5G digital services\u00a0include\u00a0video,\u00a0music,\u00a0gaming,\u00a0augmented\/virtual\u00a0reality\u00a0and\u00a0consumer\u00a0IoT\u00a0services.<\/p>\n
